Why You Need to Visit Universal’s Springfield Before It’s Too Late

The biggest thing to know is that Springfield, U.S.A. is still officially listed as an active land at Universal Studios Florida, with The Simpsons RideKang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl, character photo opportunities, themed restaurants, shops, Moe’s Tavern, Duff Brewery, and Lard Lad Donuts still featured on Universal Orlando’s official site.

There does not appear to be a major new ride or newly opened expansion inside Springfield itself right now. The land is more of a “classic Universal Orlando must-do” than a brand-new area. Springfield originally opened at Universal Orlando in 2013 as the world’s first Simpsons-themed environment, so its appeal is in the full themed atmosphere, food, jokes, signs, photo spots, and character details rather than a recent overhaul.

The “Expiration Date” Buzz: While there isn’t a new physical ride, the biggest news circulating around Springfield is its ticking clock. Universal’s licensing agreement for The Simpsons intellectual property is widely rumored to expire around 2028. Because Disney now owns the franchise, industry experts and theme park fans are heavily discussing the likely reality that Springfield will eventually be rethemed (with rumors pointing to retro properties or Nintendo expansions). This makes visiting the land right now more important than ever before it changes forever!

What Not to Miss

1. The Simpsons Ride

This is the main attraction in Springfield. Universal describes it as an indoor simulated roller-coaster-style ride through Krustyland with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. It is the big “do this first” experience for Simpsons fans.

2. Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl

This is the lighter, kid-friendly spinner ride in the area. Universal says the flying saucers reach about 13 mph and rise up to 10 feet, so it is more of a fun family ride than a major thrill attraction.

3. Krusty Burger

Krusty Burger is one of the most recognizable food stops in Springfield. Universal lists it as a quick-service restaurant with menu items such as the Krusty Burger, Clogger Burger, Ribwich, Beyond Burger, and Heat Lamp Dog. Mobile Food Ordering is also listed as available.

4. Lard Lad Donuts

This is one of the easiest “don’t leave without it” stops. Universal’s official page highlights the giant pink-iced donuts and Brain Freezin’ D’oh-Nut Sundaes at Lard Lad Donuts.

7. The Small Details and Photo Spots

Springfield is worth slowing down for because the jokes are built into the setting: storefronts, signs, the Lard Lad statue, the Chief Wiggum photo spot, Duff details, and the overall cartoon-town look. Universal’s official page highlights visual landmarks like Chief Wiggum, Lard Lad Donuts, Krusty Burger, and Springfield-themed shopping.

Don’t Skip the Merch Store

Stop at the Kwik-E-Mart before leaving Springfield. It is the main Simpsons-themed shopping stop inside Universal Studios Florida, located in the Springfield area. The store sells Simpsons-themed toys, apparel, books, souvenirs, and more.

Tip: visit the shop after riding The Simpsons Ride or after eating in Springfield. That way, you can decide whether you want a small souvenir, a wearable item, or just a few photos for memories before moving to the next area.

Best Practical Tips: Time, Lines & Money-Saving Tips

  • Go earlier in the day for The Simpsons Ride. It is the main attraction in Springfield, so it is usually better to ride it before using the land as a lunch or snack stop. Universal lists The Simpsons Ride as the headline ride in Springfield.
  • Know the height requirement before you get in line. The Simpsons Ride requires guests to be at least 40 inches / 102 cm tall, and children between 40–48 inches / 102–122 cm must ride with a supervising companion.
  • Use Springfield as a midday break. After bigger rides, stop here for food, photos, and a slower walk through the themed storefronts. It works well as a reset area because Springfield combines rides, dining, shops, character moments, and photo spots in one compact section.
  • Avoid lunch rush if you want shorter food waits. Try eating before noon or later in the afternoon instead of peak lunch hours. For Krusty Burger and other quick-service options, check whether Mobile Food & Drink Ordering is available in the Universal Orlando app; Universal says guests can choose a restaurant, order, customize items, and pay through the app.
  • Use Universal Express only if the whole park is busy. Universal lists Universal Express from $119.99 to $319.99 plus tax for 1-Park, with prices subject to change and valid admission required. It can save time, but it may not be worth buying only for Springfield unless you plan to use it across multiple participating rides.
  • Check official ticket and package deals before buying. Universal’s current site promotes offers such as “Get 2 Days Free with a 3-Day Ticket” and “Bundle and Save up to $300” on a Universal vacation. These offers can change, so compare the official ticket page before booking.
  • Consider a Universal hotel if you want park perks. Universal says guests staying at its hotels receive exclusive theme park benefits. This can be useful if your goal is to reduce stress, save time getting to the parks, or bundle hotel and tickets.
  • Annual Passholders may save on select tickets and extras. Universal lists up to 15% off select multi-day theme park admission tickets for some Annual Pass types, plus other benefits that may include parking or VIP discounts depending on pass level. These discounts do not apply to every ticket type, so check the exact pass terms.
  • Do not skip the cheap “fun value” stops. Even without buying a full meal, Springfield is good for photos, character moments, storefront jokes, and one iconic snack like a giant donut from Lard Lad. That makes it one of the easier Universal areas to enjoy without spending a lot.
  • Save Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl for families or downtime. It is a lighter spinning ride, so it works well when you want a break from bigger attractions rather than a high-priority rope-drop ride. Universal lists it as one of Springfield’s rides alongside The Simpsons Ride.
