Bass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace: Why It’s More Than a Sporting Goods Store

Buyer's GuideBass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace in Irvine, California
Bass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace offers fishing, camping, apparel, outdoor cooking, décor, and more.

Bass Pro Shops may be best known for fishing, hunting, and camping gear, but the Bass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace in Irvine, California, feels much broader than a typical sporting goods store.

Walk through the entrance and you quickly realize that this is partly a store, partly an outdoor-themed showroom, and partly a place to simply explore. Huge wildlife displays, rustic timber structures, murals, specialized departments, outdoor clothing, footwear, camping equipment, fishing gear, gifts, and seasonal displays fill the building.

The Irvine Bass Pro Shops opened at Alton Marketplace in 2024. The approximately 140,000-square-foot Outdoor World store is located in the Irvine Spectrum District at 71 Technology Drive, near the intersection of I-5 and Alton Parkway.

After walking through the store, one thing becomes clear: you definitely do not need to be a serious hunter or angler to find something interesting here. Plus, the current Fall Hunting Classic Sale offers up to 40% off thousands of items.

First Impression: This Doesn’t Feel Like a Regular Sporting Goods Store

Even before going inside, Bass Pro Shops makes an impression.

The Irvine location has the oversized Outdoor World entrance, timber-style architecture, stonework, and the familiar Bass Pro Shops logo. It looks much closer to a giant wilderness lodge than to a conventional big-box retailer. That theme continues once you enter.

The lodge-style interior makes Bass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace feel like an outdoor destination.

Bass Pro Shops deliberately builds many of its stores around this destination-shopping concept. The company describes its stores as places combining outdoor merchandise with displays and experiences, and the Irvine location officially lists amenities including an aquarium, archery range, bait shop, boat shop, archery service, line spooling, off-road vehicles, and more.

That makes simply walking around part of the visit.

Fishing Is Still One of the Main Attractions

Fishing remains one of the most impressive departments at Bass Pro Shops in Irvine. Long rows of rods, reels, tackle, lures, line, and accessories occupy a substantial part of the store, with options ranging from basic setups to more specialized equipment.

There is a noticeable spread in price as well. On my visit, individual price tags in the rod section included examples at $99.99, $139.99, and $204.99, giving shoppers options at several price levels before even moving into premium equipment.

Fishing is also one of the better categories to check for rotating deals. Bass Pro Shops’ current Fishing Bargain Cave advertises savings of up to 33% on select fishing products, while its Annual Fishing Clearance Event promotes up to 50% off fishing gear, including rods, reels, and related equipment. Prices and availability can vary by product and store.

Rows of fishing rods and reels highlight the store’s extensive fishing department.

The fishing theme extends into the store experience itself. Alton Marketplace says the Irvine Bass Pro Shops includes a 13,000-gallon aquarium with approximately 90 native fish, reinforcing the feeling that this is as much an outdoor destination as a retail department.

For experienced anglers, the selection alone is a reason to visit. For casual shoppers, the combination of equipment, services, marine technology, and immersive displays makes this one of the store’s most interesting areas to explore.

Camping Takes Up Much More Space Than You Might Expect

Camping is another major part of the store, with tents, folding chairs, sleeping gear, backpacks, and other equipment arranged in large lifestyle displays that feel closer to a campsite than a conventional retail aisle.

The department covers everything from simple weekend trips to more complete outdoor setups. Prices vary widely, but there are accessible options: the Ascend Rover Hard Arm Folding Camp Chair, for example, is currently $49.99 at Bass Pro Shops.

The camping department combines tents, chairs, bikes, and other outdoor essentials.

Larger tents, sleeping systems, coolers, lighting, and other gear quickly move into higher price ranges, so it is worth checking promotions before buying. Bass Pro Shops maintains a dedicated Camping & Hiking Bargain Cave for discounted tents, sleeping bags, flashlights, and other camping equipment.

At the moment, Bass Pro Shops is also advertising an extra 50% off select clearance items, although eligible products and availability vary.

Outdoor Cooking Has Become a Department of Its Own

You could easily visit Bass Pro Shops without buying fishing or hunting equipment and spend plenty of time in the outdoor cooking section, where full-size flat-top griddles, grills, and cooking accessories are displayed together.

Outdoor grills and flat-top griddles at Bass Pro Shops Irvine
Outdoor cooking equipment ranges from portable grills to larger flat-top griddles.

Prices cover both portable and larger setups. For example, Bass Pro Shops currently lists the Cabela’s 2-Burner Tabletop Griddle at $129.99, with CLUB members saving $30.01, while the larger Cabela’s 36″ Propane Griddle is listed at $349.99.

That 36″ model provides 775 sq. in. of cooking space, making it more suitable for backyard cookouts, tailgating, or larger campsite meals.

It is worth checking promotions before buying: Bass Pro Shops’ current Fall Hunting Classic runs August 6–26 with savings of up to 40% on participating merchandise, although individual products and store availability vary.

There Is a Surprisingly Large Footwear Section

One section that might surprise first-time visitors is footwear. The department carries sandals, casual shoes, clogs, hiking footwear, hunting boots, and other outdoor styles for men, women, and kids.

The footwear department includes sandals, clogs, casual shoes, and outdoor styles.

Prices range from relatively inexpensive sandals to more specialized footwear. For example, World Wide Sportsman Permit Sandals are currently $19.97, down from $29.99, while Crocs Classic Clogs start at $36.97, with savings of up to 26% depending on color and size.

There is also a dedicated Shoes & Boots Bargain Cave with hundreds of sale and clearance styles, so this is one department where it is worth checking discounted inventory before paying regular price.

The broad footwear selection reinforces the point that Bass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace is not just for shoppers looking for fishing or hunting equipment.

Men’s and Women’s Clothing Feel Like Separate Stores

The apparel selection is much larger than a few racks of hiking shirts, with dedicated Men’s Apparel and Ladies’ Apparel areas covering jackets, pants, shirts, outdoor clothing, casual wear, and seasonal merchandise.

Brands include Wrangler and Carhartt, while Bass Pro Shops also carries outdoor-focused labels such as Cabela’s, RedHead, Columbia, Under Armour, and Ascend. Bass Pro Shops lists Carhartt, Columbia, Under Armour, and other major outdoor names among its featured brands.

There are plenty of lower-priced and clearance options as well. During this visit, women’s apparel displays included items at $25.98 and $29.99, along with a clearance price of $25.97. Bass Pro Shops’ current men’s clearance section includes discounts of up to 26% on select items, while its Annual Women’s Clothing Clearance Event advertises savings of up to 50%.

With separate departments, recognizable brands, and frequent clearance pricing, the apparel areas feel almost like outdoor clothing stores within the larger Bass Pro Shops experience—another reason to browse even if fishing or hunting gear is not on your shopping list.

Hunting and Archery Are Major Parts of the Store

Hunting remains a major category, with camouflage clothing, specialized outerwear, accessories, wildlife displays, and a dedicated Hunting Clothing section. Bass Pro Shops carries both value-oriented and premium gear; for example, SHE Outdoor Encounter Pants are currently $39.98.

The archery department is equally specialized, with bows, targets, and accessories, while the Irvine location also offers an archery range and archery service. Archery targets currently include options such as the BlackOut Buck 3D Deer Target at $99.98 and the Delta McKenzie Strutter Turkey Target at $139.99.

This is also a particularly good time to browse the department: the Fall Hunting Classic runs through August 26 and advertises savings of up to 40% overall, with the dedicated archery promotion advertising up to 50% off select bows.

Even for visitors who are simply browsing, these departments show how far Bass Pro Shops goes beyond a typical sporting goods aisle.

There Are Plenty of Things That Have Little to Do With Sports

One of the more unexpected parts of the store is the amount of merchandise that feels closer to a gift or home décor shopthan a sporting goods retailer. Bass Pro Shops’ Home section includes wall décor, bedding, rugs, home accents, lamps, candles, furniture, kitchenware, toys, and outdoor-living products.

Lake-house and cabin themes are especially prominent, with signs and decorations centered around lake life, beach living, cabins, and vacation homes. Prices can be quite reasonable: the Mud Pie Lake House Door Hanger is currently $21.97, down from $29.99—a 26% clearance discount.

Lake-themed signs and home décor show the lifestyle side of Bass Pro Shops.

More substantial wall art costs more; for example, Open Road Brands Ducks on Lake Framed Wood Wall Decor is currently $44.99. Bass Pro Shops also maintains a dedicated Home & Cabin Clearance section covering artwork, pillows, throws, lamps, bedding, and other décor.

It reinforces an important point: Bass Pro Shops is not simply selling equipment for outdoor activities—it also sells the outdoor lifestyle, making these sections worth browsing for lake-house décor, cabin accessories, or gifts even if fishing and camping gear are not on your list.

Even Blankets and Comfort Items Get the Outdoor Treatment

Another interesting display featured colorful Rumpl outdoor blankets, with in-store prices during my visit ranging from about $99.95 to $129.

These are designed to bridge camping gear and everyday comfort. The Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket, for example, is made for portable outdoor use, while National Park editions use recycled synthetic insulation and include features such as a Cape Clip and corner loops.

There are worthwhile discounts on some designs, too. Bass Pro Shops recently listed the Rumpl Great Smoky Mountains National Park Original Puffy Blanket for $99.99, down from $129.99 — a $30 saving.

Displayed beneath the Bass Pro Shops slogan “More Outdoors for Your Money,” these blankets are a good example of how modern outdoor products increasingly overlap with camping, travel, and lifestyle gear.

The Store Rewards Exploring

Part of what makes the Irvine location enjoyable is the way departments flow into one another.

You might walk from footwear into camping, then find outdoor cooking equipment, continue past clothing, and suddenly arrive at a huge fishing or marine section.

Bass Pro Shops was founded by angler Johnny Morris in 1972, originally from an eight-square-foot tackle display in the back of his father’s store in Springfield, Missouri. The company has since developed its retail model around both outdoor products and destination-style shopping experiences.

The Irvine store is a good example of that philosophy.

Watch for Sales Around the Store

Promotions are worth watching as you move between departments, with SALE, CLEARANCE, and CLUB MEMBER PRICE offers appearing on everything from apparel to hunting and camping gear.

The current Fall Hunting Classic runs August 6–26, 2026, with up to 40% off select merchandise. Some deals are substantial: Vortex Crossfire HD Binoculars in TrueTimber Strata Camo are $99.98, down from $169.99 (save $70.01), while Irish Setter VaprTrek Desert Stealth hunting boots start at $149.98, down from $199.99.

Because promotions rotate, it is worth checking both current online offers and in-store signs before paying regular price.

What Is the Bass Pro Shops CLUB?

You will also notice Bass Pro Shops CLUB pricing and a dedicated CLUB counter. The CLUB Mastercard rewards purchases with points that can be redeemed at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s: Classic members earn 2% back in CLUB Points, Silver 3%, and Black 5% on qualifying Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s purchases. Bass Pro Shops is currently advertising up to $60 in CLUB Points for new approved cardholders who meet the offer requirements.

The Bass Pro Shops CLUB counter promotes member rewards, points, and special offers.

There are additional savings opportunities. Bass Pro Shops’ price-match policy says qualifying competitor prices can be matched, while eligible CLUB members can beat the matched price by another 5% when the program requirements are met.

During the Fall Hunting Classic, Bass Pro Shops is also advertising 0% APR for 12 months on eligible CLUB purchases of $500 or more, followed by the applicable 9.99% purchase APR, subject to the offer terms and credit approval.

For occasional shoppers, though, it still makes sense to compare the regular sale price with CLUB pricing rather than assuming membership automatically produces the lowest final cost.

Is Bass Pro Shops Worth Visiting If You Don’t Hunt or Fish?

I think this is where the Alton Marketplace location becomes especially interesting. You do not have to be shopping for specialized sporting equipment to have a reason to visit.

Consider everything else inside:

  • Jackets and casual apparel;
  • Outdoor cooking equipment;
  • Drinkware;

  • Boating and marine electronics;
  • Off-road equipment;

Then add the huge murals, wildlife displays, lodge-style architecture, aquarium, and specialized departments.

It becomes much easier to understand why Bass Pro Shops uses the Outdoor World name.

Is It Good for Families?

Bass Pro Shops can be an interesting stop with children because there is much more to see than sporting equipment. Wildlife displays appear throughout the store, and the Irvine location also lists an aquarium among its amenities.

There is a surprisingly large selection of toys, including Bass Pro Shops-branded vehicles, playsets, LEGO, horses, and outdoor-themed gifts.

Outdoor-themed toys, vehicles, and playsets add a kid-friendly shopping option inside the store.

Another family-friendly section carries birdhouses, bird feeders, bird food, seed cakes, and build-or-paint bird kits—items that can be fun for both kids and adults interested in backyard wildlife.

Birdhouses, feeders, seed, and backyard bird supplies offer another family-friendly section to explore.

That said, Bass Pro Shops is not a toy store or children’s attraction. It is a large working retail environment with sporting equipment, tall displays, and merchandise throughout, so younger children should be supervised closely while exploring.

Bass Pro Shops also hosts seasonal events and family-oriented programs at different times of the year, making it worth checking the Irvine store’s current event schedule before visiting.

How Much Time Should You Allow?

If you already know exactly what you need, Bass Pro Shops can obviously be a quick shopping stop.

But for a first visit, I would allow at least an hour if you actually want to explore the store. The 140,000-square-foot footprint alone gives you an idea of the scale.

Someone interested in multiple departments—or simply taking photos and looking at the displays—could easily spend considerably longer.

Tips Before Visiting Bass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace

Check inventory online first if you need a specific item. Bass Pro Shops allows shoppers to choose a store and check local availability for many products.

Look beyond the department you came for. The footwear, clothing, camping, cooking, and gift sections are easy to miss if you immediately head toward fishing or hunting.

Compare regular and CLUB pricing. Some displays have separate member prices, so read the sign carefully before assuming the advertised number applies to everyone.

Check current promotions. Sale events change throughout the year, and promotional pricing seen during one visit may no longer apply later.

Give yourself time to explore. This is one of those stores where wandering around is part of the experience.

Getting There

Bass Pro Shops is located at Alton Marketplace in the Irvine Spectrum District, at: 71 Technology Drive, Irvine, CA 92618.

Alton Marketplace is positioned near I-5 and Alton Parkway and includes several other large-format retailers, making it possible to combine Bass Pro Shops with other shopping in the same area.

Final Verdict: More Outdoor Destination Than Sporting Goods Store

Calling Bass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace simply a sporting goods store does not quite capture it. Yes, fishing, hunting, boating, and camping are still at its core. But then there’s the environment.

The timber architecture, giant department signs, scenic murals, wildlife displays, aquarium, and oversized product areas turn shopping into something closer to exploring an outdoor-themed marketplace.

You may arrive looking for one piece of camping equipment and end up wandering through fishing rods, lake-house decorations, footwear, grills, apparel, and an archery department before reaching the checkout.

Beach-themed signs and coastal décor add another lifestyle-shopping element to Bass Pro Shops in Irvine.

And that is probably the best way to describe Bass Pro Shops at Alton Marketplace:

It is a sporting goods store—but it is designed to be an experience as much as a place to shop.
